Diagnostic Medical Sonography Overview

Visualize your future in the medical field working with physicians and helping them determine a medical diagnosis for patients. CVTC offers a two-year Diagnostic Medical Sonography associate degree.

In the program, you will learn how to:

  • Obtain and record an accurate patient history.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures and obtain diagnostic images.
  • Analyze technical information.
  • Use independent judgment to recognize the need to extend the scope of a procedure, depending upon the diagnostic findings.
  • Provide an oral or written summary of the technical findings to the physician for medical diagnosis.
  • Provide quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other members of the health care team.

The program includes a seven-month internship at a clinical site to provide hands-on experience.

This program has an advanced placement entry option. Advanced placement is an opportunity for graduates of a related program to further their education. Learn more about advanced placement for this program.

HESI Assessment

In addition to the above items, you will also need to take the HESI assessment. The HESI is intended to assess your knowledge in English, Math, and Science. You will have only three attempts to successfully pass the assessment. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you take the HESI after you complete General Anatomy & Physiology.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Students entering health programs at CVTC should understand the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDs, through saliva and blood with direct patient care as part of their education.

This exposure can be minimized or eliminated using a combination of engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, training, medical surveillance, Hepatitis B vaccination, signs and labels, and other provisions.

All programs at CVTC comply with local, state, and federal infection control policies, including the use of standard precautions as stipulated by current CDC guidelines. Written policies and instructions on infection control protocol to minimize the risk of disease transmission is provided throughout the courses in the curriculum. Compliance of safety practices is evaluated throughout the students' clinical experiences to ensure a safe educational environment.

Sample Courses

Abdominal Sonography
Prepares learners to perform ultrasounds of the abdominal organs including liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, spleen, urinary tract, aorta, and retroperitoneum.

OB/GYN Sonography 1
Prepares learners to perform ultrasounds of the nongravid uterus and the first trimester pregnancy. Explores the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the female reproductive system as well as intrauterine and ectopic pregnancies.

Superficial Sonography
Prepares learner to perform ultrasounds of the thyroid, breast, male reproductive system, musculoskeletal system, and GI tract.
