Medical Assistant Overview

Find your future in the healthcare field in one year! CVTC’s Medical Assistant program allows you to earn your technical diploma and start your career quickly! As a medical assistant, you will help physicians by providing patient care, obtaining vital signs, and assisting with examinations and minor office surgery. Medical assistants also administer injectable medications and perform basic diagnostic testing.

In CVTC’s Medical Assistant program, you will learn:

  • Administrative tasks
  • Appointment scheduling
  • Billing and coding procedures 
  • EKGs, injections, and wound care
  • Vital signs and assisting with examinations
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Specimen collections
  • Basic laboratory testing
  • Electronic health record

The medical assistant classes will enhance your communication skills to prepare you for patient interaction.

The program will include a clinical practicum during the second term where students will perform medical assistant administrative, clinical, and laboratory duties under the supervision of trained mentors to effectively transition to the role of a medical assistant.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Students entering health programs at CVTC should understand the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDs, through saliva and blood with direct patient care as part of their education.

This exposure can be minimized or eliminated using a combination of engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, training, medical surveillance, Hepatitis B vaccination, signs and labels, and other provisions.

All programs at CVTC comply with local, state, and federal infection control policies, including the use of standard precautions as stipulated by current CDC guidelines. Written policies and instructions on infection control protocol to minimize the risk of disease transmission is provided throughout the courses in the curriculum. Compliance of safety practices is evaluated throughout the students' clinical experiences to ensure a safe educational environment.

Medical Assistant Lab Procedures 1
Students perform routine laboratory procedures commonly performed in the ambulatory care setting.

Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures 1
Students perform basic examining room skills including screening, vital signs, patient history, minor surgery, and patient preparation for routine and specialty exams in the ambulatory care setting.

Medical Office Insurance & Finance
Students perform bookkeeping procedures, apply managed care guidelines, and complete insurance claim forms. Students use medical coding and managed care terminology to perform insurance-related duties.
