Program Description


Structural drafting and design is a specialization within the broad field of civil engineering. Students enrolled in this program receive training in structural and related drafting, primarily as it applies to the construction of commercial and industrial buildings.

Architectural drafting, structural drafting, surveying, structural analysis, construction concrete and steel, estimating and building methods are all courses which help students understand technical data and the proper use of materials in the construction of commercial and industrial buildings. Graduates of this program will have the skills necessary to succeed in today's highly competitive job market because this two-year associate degree program emphasizes the development of computer-aided drafting skills. Traditionally, graduates find employment in a variety of engineering offices.

After completion of the Civil Engineering Technician program, the students will be able to perform the following:

• design and prepare site plans for residential and commercial buildings.
• design and prepare construction documents (architectural and structural) for wood frame, masonry, concrete, and steel frame buildings.
• design and prepare presentation drawings for a proposed two-story commercial building and be able to present your ideas.
• prepare plans, schedules, and details using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture and Revit software systems.
• prepare structural steel shop drawings for a commercial building.
• prepare structural steel erection plans for a commercial building.
• select and prepare the required design calculations for concrete and steel beams and columns, footings, floor slabs, and open web steel joists.

• Two years of college prep math or equivalent with passing grade of C or better or assessment
