This program has a January entry date.Program DescriptionThe Central Service Department of a health care facility is the hub of all activity involving supplies and equipment for surgery, obstetrics, and other patient care areas. The central service technician assumes an important role in supporting patient care services and is especially involved in the prevention of infection. The central service technician cleans, sterilizes, and assembles equipment, supplies, and instruments according to prescribed procedures and techniques. They are also responsible for the records associated with orders, charges, and inventory. The curriculum is comprised of central service technician skill courses, occupational support, and general education courses. The graduate is awarded a technical diploma and is eligible to write the international certification exam offered by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution. Central service is an emerging occupation and will expand as health care becomes more specialized. Hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and other health care facilities are finding it increasingly necessary to hire individuals who specialize in the maintenance, storage, and handling of equipment, supplies, and instruments.
