This program has August and January entry dates.

Program Description

The Air Conditioning, Heating, & Refrigeration Technology (ACHR) program is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in designing, installing, and maintaining air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment as well as geothermal, solar, and other renewable energy equipment. Specific areas of instruction for the first semester include: gas, oil, and electric furnaces, basic refrigeration, and air conditioning systems, renewable energies, and principles of ACHR electricity. Second semester areas of instruction include geothermal, solar, print reading, load calculations, and technical problems. The third and fourth semesters include CAD, air handling, advanced temperature controls, hydronics, and HVAC systems design and drafting.

The program prepares the technician to take the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certification Exam for safe handling of refrigerants. The Industry Competency Exam (ICE) sponsored by the Air Conditioning and Refrigertion Institute for HVAC/R technicians is a requirement for all students.

The HVAC/R industry immediately needs to fill the shortage of design, installation, and maintenance technicians. Future trends indicate there is an increase in employment opportunities for GREEN collar workers and is projected to grow faster than the average, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Students can enter the program each August and January for daytime classes. The HVAC/R classes are also offered evenings to meet the needs of part-time students.
