~Connecting Work Experience and Education~

  Administrative Assistant Degree Program

A new opportunity for personal and professional growth
offered by the Business Technology Department at
Chippewa Valley Technical College

CVTC is now offering the Administrative Assistant associate degree program in a format designed for adults who must work full-time while completing their education. It's called "accelerated learning," and it means we use teaching and learning techniques that help you understand the material faster and retain it better.

CareerConnect is not a shortcut; it is a commitment to independent and group study.

What is CareerConnect?
Career Connect is an opportunity to earn an Administrative Assistant Associate Degree:
  • in approximately 3.5 years.
  • spending one night per week in the classroom.
  • working through the program as a group.
  • in a program that gives credit for qualified work experience.
Admission Requirements:
  • Minimum three years' office work experience OR the Office Assistant diploma and two years' work experience.
  • Interview with the Program Coordinator and subsequent approval for admission into the program.
  • Permit to Register form signed by the Program Coordinator.
  • Register through CVTC established procedures.
  • Attendance at the introductory meeting to be held in August.
  • Completion of a portfolio during first year in program.
What is the Portfolio?
  • A compilation of documents used to grant transfer credit and work experience credit.
  • Portfolio is reviewed by the Program Coordinator and counselors.
  • Second interview conducted after the portfolio evaluation when a personal course sequence is prepared granting credit for work experience or allowing for transfer credit.
  • Students will be given a detailed description of what to include in the portfolio. In general, however, the portfolio contains transcripts of past course work, military service information, descriptions of work experiences that may be worth college credit, lists of seminars, workshops, on-the-job training programs, and copies of their last two performance evaluations.
  • Portfolios become part of the student's permanent record and remain at CVTC.
General Course Information:
  • Core program courses meet one evening per week from 6-9 p.m.
  • Students enroll for one core program class per eight-week period.
  • Core program courses run eight weeks each.
  • Core courses are taken in sequence or a student may "sit-out" classes for which she/he has received work experience or transfer credit.
  • Students are responsible for completing general studies courses on their own. General courses are offered in traditional, self-paced, and online formats. The program coordinator and counselors can recommend and advise students about what general education classes to take and when to take them.
Tentative Course Sequence
All core (106) classes run 8 weeks. 800-level courses are general education courses.
