How do I get a library card?
Identification cards obtained through the Student Life Office (ECB115) serve as student library cards. Faculty and staff should request library cards at the Circulation Desk. Community users may obtain a library card by filling out an application and showing a photo I.D. at the Circulation Desk.

Can I type a report, letter, resume in the Library?
Yes, Microsoft Word is available for your word processing needs.

Can I access my e-mail account in the Library?
Yes, you will be able to read and send your e-mail. Type the web address of your e-mail provider in the address line of the Web browser. To access your student e-mail account, go to http://vista.cvtc.edu. Login using your user name and password.

What equipment is available for use in the Library?
The Library has television monitors and video playback units with headsets located in the AV carrels near the back of the Library. Computer terminals are available for Library and Internet access. Headsets are available at each computer workstation.

Can Community users use library workstations?
Community users and off-campus high school students must present a current community library card. To apply for a library card, fill out an application and show a photo ID at the circulation desk. Community users and off-campus high school students must request computer access at the circulation desk. Users will be expected to provide the current date, time in, name, library card number (barcode), signature, and identify which computer workstation they will be using. Users sign up in 30-minute increments and are expected to check out at the circulation desk at the end of their 30-minute time. Library staff will physically log them on to the workstation. Users may sign up for an additional 30 minutes based on availability. Community users and off-campus high school students are limited to a maximum of 60 minutes per day. Users will have Internet access only. College policies regarding Internet, e-mail, and computer use will be enforced. Copies of College policies are available upon request.

Can Community users print documents from library workstations?
Documents must be saved to a floppy disk, CD-ROM Read/Write disc, or a flash drive. Printing will be handled by the College duplicating center at a set price per page. The College duplicating center is located at the Eau Claire Business Education Center, Room 150. The center is open 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays during the academic year; summer and interim hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Submit your duplicating requests in person or via e-mail at duplicatingorders@cvtc.edu. Users must pick up orders within 48 hours. Users who do not pick up orders within 48 hours will be denied future electronic requests. For additional information, contact the duplicating center at 833-6236 or 833-1835.

Are photocopiers available for use in the Library?
We have a self-service copy machine available for use. Copies are $.10 each.

Is change available in the Library?
Change for paper money is available at the Circulation Desk. The copier will accept nickels, dimes and quarters and will refund change.

How do I access Reserve materials?
Materials on Reserve are housed behind the Circulation Desk. You will need your Student ID to check these items off of Reserve. Many of these items do not circulate outside of the library, and others circulate for a brief period of time.

How do I find out what books I have checked out?
You can find out what materials you have checked out through the CVTC Online Catalog. Click on "Patron" from the CVTC Online Catalog home page. To login to your record, enter your barcode number and last name. Once you have successfully logged in, you will see your current personal information, any blocks you may have, any items currently checked out to you, any requests that are pending, and any fines or fees you may be responsible for. From this screen you can renew items checked out to you or cancel requests you no longer need. Remember to logout and close your web browser when you are finished to ensure your privacy.

What is Library Instruction?
Library Instruction (LI) sessions are offered to all members of the CVTC academic community. These instructional sessions are designed to promote information literacy across the curriculum. CVTC faculty and students are introduced to library and research skills vital to information access. Library users are taught to identify, access, evaluate, and utilize print and electronic resources to enhance the teaching and learning process. Additional information about Library resources is also available through brochures, guide sheets, and audiovisual or computerized tutorials. How can I get a book or magazine article not found in the CVTC Online Catalog?
Books and magazine articles that are not found in the CVTC Online Catalog may be borrowed from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). To initiate a request, fill out an ILL form at the reference desk or online via the library's web pages.

What is WISPALS?
The WISPALS Library Consortium provides access to a shared library automation system, shared library resources, provides access to databases and other information resources at reduced costs, exchanges knowledge and skills in library automation, provides liaison between member libraries and other library agencies or groups. The consortium currently maintains over 60 electronic database subscriptions, migrated to the Voyager ILS in 2000, and implemented the Docutek Electronic Reserve System in 2003. Chippewa Valley Technical College joined WISPALS Library Consortium in 2005. Other consortium members include:

What is Badgerlink?
Badgerlink is a program supported and funded through the Department of Public Instruction-Division of Libraries, Technology and Community Learning. Its goal is to provide increased access to information for Wisconsin residents in cooperation with the state's library community. Badgerlink contains magazines, journals, newspapers and other information by providing access to the EBSCOhost periodical databases and ProQuest newspaper databases. Badgerlink also provides links to reference sites, government links to Wisconsin states and some federal and foreign agencies, education and library sites.

To use these resources, you must be a Wisconsin resident and/or access the materials from a Wisconsin library. Wisconsin residents with personal Internet accounts can use the magazine and newspaper databases from their accounts if their Internet Service Provider has registered its IP addresses with the DPI library division. If you are using a provider that has registered with BadgerLink, you should not be prompted for a password or User ID. How much are CVTC library's overdue charges?
Overdue items are $.25 per day per item for all materials. No fines are charged for Sundays or holidays. There is no grace period.

What are the "CVTC Main Stacks"?
The "CVTC Main Stacks" are the main shelving units that contain the Library’s nonfiction book collection, arranged by Library of Congress call number. These items circulate for 3 weeks.

How do I complete the loan entrance and loan exit counseling in the library?
You may complete this process at any computer via the web. Using your Internet browser, go to the "Mapping Your Future" site at mapping-your-future.org. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Where can I pay a Library fine?
Library fines are payable at the Library Circulation Desk.

How do I renew materials?
Library materials may be renewed in person at the CVTC library Circulation Desk, by phone (715-833-6285), or via the CVTC Online Catalog home page. To login to your record, enter your barcode number and last name. Once you have successfully logged in, you will see your current personal information, any blocks you may have, any items currently checked out to you, any requests that are pending, and any fines or fees you may be responsible for. From this screen you can renew items checked out to you. Check the box in front of the title you want to renew and then click "Renew Items." You will then see under "Renewal Status" the new due date of the item you renewed. Remember to logout and close your web browser when you are finished to ensure your privacy.

Where can I return library materials?
CVTC book drops are located at the Circulation Desk and outside the Clairemont Avenue entrance of the Business Education Center.

What is NetLibrary?
NetLibrary is a collection of electronic books (eBooks) available to CVTC staff, faculty, and students.

How do I access NetLibrary?
Students, faculty and staff can access eBooks online on campus, from work, at home, or anywhere you have access to the Internet. Set up an account from a computer on the campus network at a CVTC campus site. Once your account, username, and password have been set up, you can access the CVTC eBook collection from outside the campus network via the Internet. NetLibrary can be accessed through the CVTC Online Catalog. Search by author "NetLibrary" to view a listing of all available eBooks. Specific authors, titles, or subjects may also be searched.

How can I access the library licensed databases from off-campus?
The CVTC library subscribes to online databases that, by contract, are restricted to use by current students, faculty and staff at CVTC. Users at any CVTC campus location have direct access to these resources via the library's web page. Access to the library's online databases while at home or from other off campus locations is now available via the CVTC proxy server. A proxy server is a special type of server that allows off campus access to subscription library databases. Two primary functions are performed. 1. Login to VISTA (http://vista.cvtc.edu) to verify that you are a current student or CVTC employee. This ensures compliance with vendor licensing restrictions. 2. Login to the proxy server to connect to the library databases. Click on the links below to access the library databases off campus.

How do I format a citation for a bibliography?
The Library has a list of web resources and print style manuals in the Library Tutorial, "Citing Your Sources" section.

How do I access E-Stream Videos?
E-Stream Videos are accessible from college campus computer stations via the CVTC Intranet. These video assets must be viewed on a computer located at any of the CVTC campuses. To access E-Stream Videos, follow the directions below:
  • In the Library, click on the CVTC E-Stream icon on the desktop.
  • Once on the E-Stream page, click on "Search for CCTV Video assets Here."
  • The Virage search box will come up. Within the box type in the call letters and numbers of the video you wish to view. Example: med-488 [use the proper prefix (not case sensitive), hyphen, and numbers]. Click search.
  • Click on the "play E-Stream" icon located to the left of the title of the video.
