Glossary
Abstract
A brief summary giving the essential points of a book, report, or article. Reading an abstract is helpful in determining whether or not the document will help in your research.
Atlas
A collection of maps, plates, and tables, using geographical information.
Audiovisual Materials
Materials such as videocassettes, slides, audiocassettes, CD-ROMS, transparencies, and teaching aids (i.e. flash cards or games). These are non-book materials.
Bibliography
A list of citations for books, periodical articles, and other materials. Extensive bibliographies are commonly located in the library's reference collection.
Boolean Operators
The words AND, OR, and NOT are often used to combine search terms to limit or broaden a search in an electronic database. This type of process is called Boolean searching.
Circulation Desk
It is the place to check out, return, and renew materials as well as activate your student ID (library card), pay fines and replacement costs.
Citation
A written reference to an article, book or other material. It usually includes author, title, source, page number, and date of publication.
Copyright
Copyright is a form of legal protection that gives authors and others the right to reproduce, publish, and sell literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. Both published and unpublished works are included under this protection.
Encyclopedia
A book or set of books (multiple volumes) containing articles on a variety of topics usually in alphabetical arrangement which covers all branches of knowledge or all aspects of one subject.
Full-Text Database
An electronic database that includes the entire text of the articles or documents indexed.
Gazetteer
A dictionary of geographic names that gives the location of the entry and basic information about geographical features. It can also be an index of place names and geographic features in an atlas.
Index
An index is used to identify the contents of something. Located normally at the back of a work, it serves as a guide to the contents of a book, document or computer file. Large, comprehensive indexes, available both in print and electronically, describe the contents of journals, giving researchers and other library users information to locate specific articles in a journal. Indexes are usually arranged by author, title and/or keyword.
ISBN/ISSN
They are abbreviations for the International Standard Number for a book or serial title. It is either a unique 10-digit number that is used to identify a book or a unique 8-digit number that is used to identify a serial title.
Journal
Journals contain scholarly, in-depth articles disseminating research and commentary on current developments within a specific field. Articles generally include a bibliography or list of works cited and may be peer-reviewed.
Keyword
A significant word or phrase found in a record, in a library catalog or electronic database that aids in retrieval. In full-text searching, every word in a document becomes a keyword.
Magazine
Magazines contain short articles providing broad overviews of popular topics often written by journalists. They are usually published on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, annually, etc.).
Monograph
A monograph is a non-serial publication on a single subject complete in one volume or intended to be completed within a certain time consisting of a single work or a collection of works.
Peer-reviewed
Is the process of critical evaluation by experts in the field to determine quality, originality, clarity of presentation, and if the subject of the article falls within the scope of the publication. Journals usually require it.
Periodical
Is a generic term that refers to journals, magazines, newspapers, and newsletters that are published at regular stated intervals.
Reserve
Material in any format that has a limited checkout period. The faculty member that places the item on reserve determines the checkout period. The periods include: Library use only, 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, and 2 weeks.
Serials
Publications such as magazines, journals, and newspapers which are consecutively numbered and indefinitely continued that are published on a regular basis such as daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.
Thesaurus
A book of synonyms in a written language arranged conceptually or dictionary-style. It is also a list of subject headings or descriptors used in a particular database, catalog, or index.
