CVTC Technology Resource Library's Tutorial

Call Numbers

A call number is an identification number assigned to a variety of materials in the library. A call number is usually located on the label that is affixed to the spine of a book or other item.

Public libraries often use Dewey Decimal call numbers. These call numbers begin with an Arabic numeral.

Academic libraries usually adhere to the Library of Congress Classification System. These call numbers begin with letters and are generally followed by Arabic numerals.

Books and other items are arranged on the shelf in call number order. Books in the Technology Resource Library at CVTC start with one, two, or three letter combinations. These letters automatically identify the subject area pertaining to the item.
