Program Description
The Fire Medic Associate Degree program prepares students for an occupation in the fire service and paramedic arenas. Courses focus on thoroughly preparing a firefighter/paramedic for entry onto a full-time fire department or other emergency response organization in the public or private sector. After completing this program, the students are prepared to challenge the National Registry for EMT-Paramedic exam. The students will be prepared as a firefighter and fire apparatus driver operator. Fire Medic students are prepared to respond to the diverse incidents of today's emergency service. The program will include special courses in water, confined space, trench, high angle, and vehicle extrication rescue.

Continuing Education
Students must have a high school diploma or its equivalent. A minimum 11th grade (12th grade preferred) reading level is required in order to be able to read texts and codes. Good math skills are also vital for success.
Students should be in good physical condition in order to pass required physical ability examinations and have no physical impediments which prevent them from performing strenuous firefighting work.
Emotional stability and maturity are also necessary due to the stress created by working in emergency and highly dangerous situations, which can involve fire medic and civilian fatalities.
General qualifications necessary to be successful in the fire medic field include good to excellent verbal and written communication skills; good math and mechanical ability and skills; an attitude of caring and empathy for other people; good judgment under emergency conditions; and maturity, with the ability to function in a paramilitary organization.

Helpful Academic Background
Three or four years of English, speech, two years of math (Algebra I), chemistry, computer keyboard skills, and physical education are beneficial.
