Schumacher to Lead State Dental Hygienist Association
Published on Tuesday, October 13, 2009
Deborah Schumacher, dental hygienist instructor at Chippewa Valley Technical College since 2002, was elected president of the 400-member Wisconsin Dental Hygienists’ Association October 4.

The association is independent of dental or other organizations. Schumacher was elected to a one-year term.

The WDHA in the coming year will work to advance legislation on two matters, Schumacher said.

The association is reviewing dental hygiene practice statutes, Schumacher said. “We would like to see fewer restrictions on the settings in which we can provide care within the scope of our practice,” she said.

The WDHA would also like to see Wisconsin statutes recognize a “new mid-level professional” similar to a nurse practitioner. The organization has also begun to advocate that a dental hygiene bachelor’s degree completion program be established at a public university in Wisconsin.

“We are prevention specialists,” Schumacher said.

WDHA members enjoy professional support, educational programs and association advocacy.
