GED/HSED
GED/HSED preparation is available at CVTC Learning Centers in five communities:
Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Menomonie, River Falls, and Neillsville. All Learning Center services are free!
What is the GED?
The General Educational Development Certificate (GED) offers people who did not finish high school the opportunity to earn high school credentials. More than 800,000 adults take GED tests each year. Over 90 percent of U.S. employers and colleges accept the GED in place of a traditional diploma. The GED requires a career assessment along with a battery of five (5) tests:
- Math
- Language Arts, Writing
- Social Studies
- Science
- Language Arts, Reading
Who can take the GED?
You may take the GED/HSED tests if you are at least 18 1/2, or if the class with which you entered 9th grade has graduated from high school. You must be a Wisconsin resident.
What is the HSED?
The High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) is more comprehensive than the GED. The HSED requires all of the above, plus:
- Verifying one-half Health credit earned in grades 7-12 or passing the additional Health test
- Verifying three Social Studies credits earned in grades 9-12, passing the additional Civics test, or completing a 36 hour, self-paced Civics course at a CVTC Learning Center.
- Completing Employability process
Who can take the HSED?
The eligibility requirements are the same as with the GED, except that some 17-year-old students, under contracted agreement with a high school, may take the tests.
