GED/HSED
CVTC offers Academic Services for those needing assistance preparing take the GED/HSED tests. All services are free! GED/HSED preparation is available at CVTC Learning Centers in five communities:
- Eau Claire
- Chippewa Falls
- Menomonie
- River Falls
- Neillsville
What is the GED?
The General Educational Development Certificate (GED) offers people who did not finish high school the opportunity to earn high school credentials. The GED requires a career assessment along with five tests:
- Math
- Language Arts, Writing
- Social Studies
- Science
- Language Arts, Reading
With a passing score on each test (minimum: 410 points), and an average of 450 points (2250 points total), the student is awarded the GED Certificate.

What is the HSED?
To complete requirements for the HSED, a student must achieve each of the GED requirements. In addition, a student must achieve the following (3) requirements:
- Complete an Employability Skills curriculum
- Complete a Civics knowledge requirement (TEST) or 36 hour course
- Complete a Health knowledge requirement (TEST)
Some requirements may be satisfied by prior jr. high or high school coursework. Consult with our Academic Services staff for an evaluation.

Who can take the GED?
You may take the GED/HSED tests if you are at least 18 1/2, or if the class with which you entered 9th grade has graduated from high school. You must be a Wisconsin resident.
Who can take the HSED?
The eligibility requirements are the same as with the GED, except that some 17-year-old students, under contracted agreement with a high school, may take the tests.
How do I get started?
In order to begin the GED/HSED process:
- Call the nearest CVTC Learning Center (view contact information, locations, and hours)
- Meet with Learning Center staff and fill out paperwork
- Take required reading test
- Take pre-tests to determine readiness for GED
- Complete career assessment
- Register for GED tests as advised by Learning Center staff
When and where do I take the tests?
CVTC administers GED tests in Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Menomonie, River Falls, and Neillsville.

When you are ready to test, your instructor can make your appointment, or you may register by contacting Lori Wells. Call Lori at 833-6514 or 1-800-547-2882, Ext. 6514, to test at any of the CVTC locations. You must be registered by noon two days before testing. The non-refundable cost is $15 per test; please pay the cashier in advance when you schedule your testing date, and bring your paid receipt with you to check into the testing room at your scheduled time.
On testing day...
- You may take one test per testing session, two tests per test day.
- You must bring a state issued photo ID each time you come to test.
- Be on time! Latecomers will not be admitted.
