Request a PIN
Students and their parents (if student is dependent * ) should request a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Department of Education. A PIN allows students and their parents to sign financial aid applications online, make corrections, sign Master Promissory Notes for student loans and access the Department of Education's National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS).
Go to www.pin.ed.gov to request a PIN. Applicants must provide their name, social security number, date of birth, mailing address, and/or e-mail address. You may request your pin to 'display now', be sent to your email account, or sent via U.S. Postal Service.
Remember, if a FAFSA application requires parent's income information, the parent must also apply for a PIN. Applications will be rejected due to lack of signatures, which will cause delays that could add three to four weeks to your processing time.
* A dependent student, for financial aid purposes, is defined by these conditions: Student (1) did not turn 24 by December 31st of the most recent year; (2) is not married; (3) is not currently on active duty for purposes other than training; (4) is not a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces; (5) does not provide more than one-half support for dependent children; and (6) is not an orphan or ward of the court.
