Surgical Technology Overview

Give your career an adrenaline rush and check out CVTC’s Surgical Technology program. You can earn your associate degree in two years and start your career.

CVTC's surgical tech training will give you the following skills:

  • Scrub, gown, and glove before procedures
  • Organizing sterile supplies and equipment
  • Assisting surgeon and assistant don gown and gloves
  • Draping patients
  • Passing instruments and assisting with procedures
  • Cleaning up OR suite and transferring patients

Surgical technologists are an integral part of a team of medical practitioners that provide surgical care to patients in a variety of settings.

A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Your training will include both classroom and hands-on clinical practice. When you complete this program, you will be awarded an associate degree in surgical technology and will take the national Surgical Technologist Certification examination.

The Surgical Technology program is a member of and accredited by the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Students entering health programs at CVTC should understand the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDs, through saliva and blood with direct patient care as part of their education.

This exposure can be minimized or eliminated using a combination of engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, training, medical surveillance, Hepatitis B vaccination, signs and labels, and other provisions.

All programs at CVTC comply with local, state, and federal infection control policies, including the use of standard precautions as stipulated by current CDC guidelines. Written policies and instructions on infection control protocol to minimize the risk of disease transmission is provided throughout the courses in the curriculum. Compliance of safety practices is evaluated throughout the students' clinical experiences to ensure a safe educational environment.

Fundamentals 1
Students develop skills in identifying basic instrumentation, supplies, drains, catheters, dressings, and sponges.

Surgical Procedures A
Examines the pathophysiology diagnostic interventions and surgical interventions for a variety of surgical procedures.

Fundamentals 2
Discusses care of the patient before, during, and after surgery with emphasis on surgical wounds, wound closure materials, and vital signs. Includes lecture and lab experiences.
