Geriatric Nursing Certificate

(TC-543-4)

Technical Certificate

Certificate Description

This certificate is restricted to registered nurses and licensed practical nurses as well as Chippewa Valley Technical College Associate Degree Nursing program students who have successfully completed courses in 543-105, 543-106, 543-107, and 543-108.

This certificate is designed to help prepare students and professionals for careers in programs, facilities, and agencies that serve older adults. For BSN nurses who have worked the required hours in care of the older adult, the course provides an opportunity to review core content in preparation for ANCC testing for certification in gerontology.

An overview of the field of gerontology and concepts from the study of aging are applied to health care. This certificate provides students with opportunities to explore and gain understanding of the biological, psychological, and sociological processes of aging as well as their effects on the needs experienced by older individuals. Through lecture and a required field experience, students will develop an appreciation for the aging process, skills and expertise for effective practice with older adults as well as specialized competencies in working with and understanding the aging population.

A certificate will be awarded upon completion of 543-162 and 543-163 for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. Chippewa Valley Technical College Associate Degree Nursing students who complete 543-162 Introduction to Geriatric Nursing and 543-116 Nursing Clinical Transition in a setting specializing in care of the older adult are also available to receive the Geriatric Nursing certificate.
