Test Details - High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED)

Did You Know?

  • 68% of HSED completers nationwide will enter college in the next year.
  • 90% of colleges, technical colleges and apprenticeships recognize the HSED diploma.
  • 95% of employers nationwide view HSED graduates on the same basis as high school diploma graduates in terms of hiring, salary, and advancement.

The HSED requires the same tests as the GED, plus these additional requirements:

​Health

There are three ways this requirement can be fulfilled:

  1. by successfully completing 0.5 high school credit in health while the individual was enrolled in school (7th to 12th grade);
  2. by successfully completing a health course that has been approved by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction;
  3. by receiving a passing score on a health test that has been approved by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and administered at a GED/HSED test center.​

Civic Literacy​

There are three ways this requirement can be fulfilled:

  1. by successfully completing three high school credits in social studies while the individual was enrolled in school (9th to 12th grade);
  2. by successfully completing a citizenship course that has been approved by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction;
  3. by receiving a passing score on a civics test that has been approved by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and administered at a GED/HSED test center.​

Employability Skills​

This requirement can be fulfilled by successfully completing the required employability skills curriculum, which includes:

  • Identifying career goals
  • Job searching
  • Completion of a job application
  • Writing a cover letter and resume
  • Participation in a mock-interview
  • Writing a thank you letter
