Two Chippewa Valley Technical College instructors have received state awards from the Wisconsin Association of Career and Technical Education (WACTE) for teaching style and community involvement.
Business management instructor Mary Felton-Kolstad was named Outstanding Instructor. Mary brings the real world into her classrooms by drawing on her past experience in the business world. Before beginning her teaching career at CVTC, she was an administrative assistant for private medical and dental/surgical clinics, served as a county human services economic support specialist, administered a first-time HUD grant through Eau Claire County and was a bookkeeper and volunteer coordinator for the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center.
Mary's past employment helps her create hands-on learning activities that enable students to gain a better understanding of basic business concepts than they would get simply by reading a textbook. Activities are designed to challenge students and meet various learning styles.
Student comments from teacher evaluations have noted her enthusiasm, knowledge of the business world, and ability to create a respectful and open learning environment.
Business management instructor Rodney Schultz received the Outstanding Member Community Involvement Award for involving students in community service and for his personal contributions to the community.
As part of their studies, Rodney's students work charitable organizations to create fundraising events. They plan, promote, market and run the events. Depending on the event, $400 to $6,000 has been raised for each organization. In another class students develop a marketing plan for a business and present it to the managers. In both exercises students benefit the community while receiving hands-on experience.
Rodney also has hosted Chippewa Valley Community Television programs on insurance and financial planning and served as a board member; organized and volunteered in fundraisers for organizations; and has held positions in five professional finance and education organizations. He has received distinguished service awards form the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors - Wisconsin and from the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors-Wisconsin Big Rivers.
WACTE is a professional organization that serves Wisconsin career and technical educators, administrators, and support professionals.
