Denise Woodford joined the CVTC faculty in 2007 with solid experience in the business world, but no background as a classroom instructor. She took to the change in her professional life with enthusiasm, fell in love with it, and has already earned a top honor for her teaching in the Business Technology program.

Woodford has been named the winner of the 2012 Domer New Faculty Teaching Award, which recognizes a faculty member for distinguished performance in the first two years as a full-time instructor at CVTC.

Woodford came to CVTC with 13 years of experience as an operations manager for a corporate chain in the Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota region, and as a small business owner herself. She started as an adjunct faculty member at CVTC before becoming full-time in 2010.

In addition to her work as a classroom teacher, Woodford has an important role as a faculty support specialist. The past three years, she presented to adjunct faculty about transitioning to the classroom. In November 2011 she took a lead role in the implementation of Edvance360, the platform for CVTC’s online instruction programs. Woodford also re-wrote the curriculum for the courses faculty members take to assist them in developing and delivering quality online instruction.

Such immersion into the field of education may have been new for Woodford, but it has been an experience she has found deeply rewarding.

“It gives me purpose,” she said. “It’s that sense of making a difference and having an impact. Our students are so appreciative of that positive difference you can make in their lives.”

Woodford recently received an e-mail from a CVTC graduate who used her as a reference and ultimately was hired for a position. The former student wrote, “I will never forget you and the impact you had.”

That former student isn’t the only one to comment on Woodford’s difference-making abilities.

“Wow! This woman has a natural gift for teaching,” wrote one student on a survey.

“Denise creates a classroom harmony by balancing a calm yet energizing and uplifting instructional atmosphere,” wrote another.

Woodford says that kind of feedback, knowing she has made a difference for students, means a great deal to her, and shows she made the right decision in coming to CVTC.

The Domer New Faculty Teaching Award is made through CVTC Foundation, Inc. , which enhances the mission and vision of CVTC by securing resources for student scholarships, staff initiatives,  technology investments and other purposes. For more information about the Foundation, go to www.cvtc.edu/foundation or e-mail foundation@cvtc.edu.
