Regional Hiring Process - Fire Service

Regional Hiring Process

Dear interested candidate;

Thank you for your interest in the Fire Department Hiring Process.

Many fire departments participate in the CVTC regional testing process which was designed to identify a qualified pool of entry level candidates. The route to apply is through Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC). You will want to review our sample application and a full description of the application process. Realize that that application is for information only and is not the application used when the actual hiring process starts. When the process begins in January 2011, the acceptable application is on CVTC’s main web page, http://www.cvtc.edu.

Other items of interest on this site will help you prepare for the process include information on the steps of the nationally recognized candidate physical ability test (CPAT). This is the test that is used by CVTC in the process for physical ability testing. CVTC has also included a link to the site for the written test that has been used in the process in the past, Ergometrics/FireTeam.

Besides completing the process with CVTC which includes the application and related documents, the physical ability test and the written exam, the hiring process continues at each department to which you apply. Other steps at each department may include a psychological test, medical evaluation, drug screen, thorough criminal background check, reference and previous employer review, and interviews.

Because of the tremendous volume of interested applicants, departments are not able to send individuals notification of when the process opens. The process dates will be listed on this website.

Check this site for the next process. It may also be advertised on the web sites listed below. It is your responsibility to check these for this information and other employment opportunities.

All department’s qualifications from the previous year’s hiring process can be found on the CVTC Fire website. The entry level requirements listed are the minimal requirements for application. I encourage you to gain experience and education to be best prepared, as those who are hired typically have additional qualifications.

It is also important for you to recognize that not only is a high level of training demanded, but the departments also look for types and depth of experience. This is most often gained from joining and actively participating with a volunteer department. Best wishes in your search.
