How to Become an International Student at CVTC

If you are interested in being admitted to an Associate Degree program at Chippewa Valley Technical College, follow the steps outlined below. We recommend that you begin this process at least six months before you would like to enroll.

Before you come:

  1. Select a program from our catalog or web-site.
  2. Complete a CVTC Application for Admission. You may request and submit a paper application or you may apply on-line. Either way, you must send us U.S. $30 for us to process your application. The application fee is non-refundable.
  3. Provide evidence of high school graduation, by sending an official transcript of your academic records. If you have attended another post-secondary institution, you may want to send us those transcripts, also, but the record of high school graduation is required. Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
  4. For non-native speakers of English, you must meet our TOEFL requirement: 500 on the paper version or 173 on the computer-administered version. Provide us with an official test score report. (If you are already in the area and interested in attending Chippewa Valley Technical College, please contact UW-Eau Claire Testing Services (836-5522) to take the TOEFL. The cost is $110 with an appointment required.)
  5. Print, complete, and submit the Certification of Financial Resources * form. You will need to provide evidence of sufficient funds to pay for tuition, books, school-related costs, and all living expenses for the period of study at Chippewa Valley Technical College. Acceptable evidence is an official letter from a bank showing that you have funds available to pay for the full cost of your education and living expenses. We regret that we are unable to provide any financial aid or scholarships to international students.
  6. Print, complete, and submit the International Student Questionnaire *.
  7. Print, complete, and submit the Emergency Contact Form *.
  8. Some programs have additional requirements for admission. Please see our catalog or web-site for details.

After you have submitted all of the above materials and have been admitted to a program, the college will issue you a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant [F-1] Student Status).

Once you receive the I-20, you will need to visit the U.S. Consulate or Embassy in your country to apply for an F-1 visa. As of September, 2004, you will need to pay a $100 SEVIS I-901 fee before making this visit. For more information on this fee and how to pay it, go to http://www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/index.htm. Once this fee is paid, in order to be considered for the student visa, you will need to provide:

  • I-20
  • Valid passport
  • Original financial documents
  • Letter of admission to Chippewa Valley Technical College

Once you are granted the F-1 visa, you may travel to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to attend Chippewa Valley Technical College.

    Once You Arrive

    1. Meet with USCIS Designated School Official, Ka Vang (715) 833-6343.
    2. Take COMPASS pre-entry test, as required of all CVTC Associate Degree students. Your scores in reading, writing, and math will be used for advising you regarding appropriate classes.
    3. Provide evidence of health insurance. We encourage you to purchase the Student Health and Accident Insurance Plan, which is offered by a local insurance agency (for students only, under age 30, $610 per year; for student only, over age 30, $830 per year). If you are entering CVTC in the fall, you must purchase insurance for both semesters.
    4. Pay, in full, all tuition and fees for books/materials when registering for classes.
