Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is the granting of credits towards an associate degree or technical diploma program for knowledge and skills the student has previously mastered and which directly relate to the program curriculum. The attainment of these skills may be the result of prior work or volunteer experiences, or through courses completed at another accredited institution. This advanced standing opportunity enables students to accelerate the completion of their educational goals.

A minimum of 50% of graduation credit requirements must be directly earned through graded coursework at CVTC. A minimum of 12 credits must be in the technical discipline or occupational core. The following are methods for obtaining advanced standing:

• Apprenticeship Training
• Articulation Agreements with High Schools
• Request for Advanced Standing Credit Form
• Challenge Exam - Individuals may request to demonstrate their skills (other than a written test) and be granted credit for a selected course by requesting and completing a Challenge Exam.
• Credit for Experiential Learning
• Proficiency Exams
• Youth Apprenticeship Coursework
