Interlibrary Loan Service

Purpose of Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service is available to provide access to materials that are not held at the CVTC library. The conditions of this service are set by the National Interlibrary Loan Code, 1980 (adopted by the American Library Association), local agreements, and the regulations of individual lending libraries.

Who May Use Interlibrary Loan?
CVTC faculty, staff, and students may use this service. A student ID or library card is required. Community users should contact their local public library for Interlibrary loan requests.

Materials Available
Books, theses, music and some materials reproduced in microfilm, such as newspapers, can be borrowed. Photocopies of non-circulating materials, primarily periodicals, can be requested in accordance with the copyright law. Items missing from the CVTC Library may be obtained.

Materials Not Available
The following types of materials cannot normally be requested: books owned by this library and temporarily in use, periodical volumes, recent nonmicrofilmed newspapers, materials for class, reserve or group use, bulky or fragile items, reference books, rare or valuable material such as manuscripts, and material that the lending library chooses not to circulate. Audiovisual materials or computer software are usually not available for ILL.

How Interlibrary Loan Works
All requests must be submitted via the library's online request form, or in person at the Reference Desk. Accurate and complete bibliographic citations should be supplied, along with the source of citation. Accurate requestor information must be provided as well. Before placing the request, determine whether the CVTC Library does not own the material by using the CVTC Online Catalog and CVTC Library's Print Resources List.

Time
Requested materials usually arrive within one to three weeks after the request is made. Items difficult to obtain may take longer. Occasionally there will be requests the CVTC Library is unable to fill. A minimum of one to three weeks is needed to search, process, and receive each request.

Cost
Most items are loaned at no charge. If the lending library needs to assess a charge, the CVTC Library will contact the requestor to verify if the request shall go forward. Lost or damaged items and fines are the responsibility of the borrower.

Notification
When the material arrives, the requestor will be notified by telephone or e-mail. If the requestor cannot be contacted, notification will be sent to the address listed on the form.

Loan Period
The loan period is determined by the lending library, and may vary from three days to three weeks. Photocopies of articles, normally, do not need to be returned. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Request a renewal three days in advance of the due date. The due date and any restrictions will be noted on the borrowed item. Items may be recalled at any time by the lending library.

Restrictions
Lending libraries determine any conditions regarding the use of their materials. Limitations such as "No Renewal" and "In Library Use Only" must be honored.

Returning Materials
All materials borrowed through ILL must be returned to the Circulation Desk. Late return of materials may jeopardize the ability of the CVTC Library to borrow from other libraries in the future.

To Request an Item
Fill out the online ILL form, or stop at the Reference Desk. Include as much verification information as possible. Read the copyright agreement. You will be contacted when the material arrives, or if we need further information.
