Off-campus access to library licensed databases via the Proxy Server:
The CVTC library subscribes to online databases that, by contract, are restricted to use by current students, faculty and staff at CVTC. Users at any CVTC campus location have direct access to these resources via the library's web page. Access to the library's online databases while at home or from other off campus locations is now available via the CVTC proxy server. A proxy server is a special type of server that allows off campus access to subscription library databases. Two primary functions are performed. 1. Login to VISTA (http://vista.cvtc.edu) to verify that you are a current student or CVTC employee. This ensures compliance with vendor licensing restrictions. 2. Login to the proxy server to connect to the library databases.
*Interlibrary Loan: Resources that are not held at CVTC can be obtained from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Items include books, theses, music and photocopies of periodical/newspaper articles. Requested items usually arrive within 1-3 weeks. Plan ahead and allow time for obtaining these materials. To request an ILL, use the online request form or stop at the Reference desk. You can also submit your interlibrary loan request direct via the BadgerCat/WorldCat link. From the CVTC Library home page, click on the "Search for Books & Media" button and then click on the second item "BadgerCat/WorldCat."
*Reserve Library Collection: A library Reserve collection is an integral part of an academic library. This special collection, housed in a secure area, supports instructional curriculum by facilitating the availability of supplementary materials for class use. The purpose is to ensure that all students have ready access to the items. Items can include copyrighted materials such as books, periodicals, periodical articles, audiovisual and computer software and non-copyrighted items such as sample tests, lecture/lab notes. Please allow 3 days for items to be cataloged and processed before making an assignment. New faculty are encouraged to contact/stop in to view materials currently on Reserve for your department/program area. For more information or to place an item on Reserve, use the online request form, or contact Kathy Goodman at 715-833-6461/kgoodman@cvtc.edu.
*Library Instruction: These sessions are designed to promote information literacy across the curriculum. Library staff will demonstrate how to identify, access, evaluate and utilize print and electronic resources through presentations. Sessions can be geared to your specific curriculum needs by demonstrating the use of the online catalog, online electronic periodical and reference databases, and the Internet. These sessions can be delivered via a lab, or multimedia classroom presentation. Guide sheets are also prepared to enhance the learning process. To request a Library Instruction session, use the online request form, or contact Kathy Goodman at 715-833-6461/kgoodman@cvtc.edu.
*Library Tours: Guided tours of the library are available upon request. These physical tours of the library facility will include information about the library's collections, services provided, library cards, equipment, etc. Participants have an opportunity to ask questions. Tours take about 20 minutes. To request a tour, use the online request form or contact the Library at 715-833-6285.
Reference/Research: Library staff can assist you with your specific information and research needs. CVTC has an extensive general reference collection that contains encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, manuals, atlases, etc. We also have a legal reference collection that is housed separately from the general collection. In addition, there is an electronic e-mail reference service and an online chat reference service, for questions of a brief/factual nature. Library staff also has access to specialized databases, which are not available to the general population, to assist in your research needs. For more information or research needs, please contact Kathy Goodman at 715-833-6461/kgoodman@cvtc.edu.
Planning a Library Assignment: Library staff can assist you with planning a library class assignment. These assignments are great for acquainting students with the Library and its services/resources and help develop information literacy skills; (the ability to identify, locate, evaluate/determine credibility, and use the information). Examples of assignments include scavenger hunt activities, reading lists, listening lists, finding an electronic database article to meet specific assignment criteria, bibliographies, etc. If you already have an assignment developed, it should be verified for accuracy each semester due to constant changes in the Library collection and electronic resources. For more information please contact Kathy Goodman at 715-833-6461/kgoodman@cvtc.edu.
Course Assignments Requiring Library Usage: If you have a class assignment prepared that requires library usage, please notify the library staff and supply a copy of the assignment. Include any particular sources you recommend and specific requirements that are needed to complete the assignment. This will allow library staff to become better prepared to assist the students with any questions they have and help they may need to complete the assignment. Library staff is often asked to interpret the instructions of an assignment. Assignments that are well designed will help create a positive experience for students and library staff alike, and will encourage students' continued use of the Library. For more information please contact the Library at 715-833-6285.
