Listening to Wisconsin Workers: Building Safer, Healthier Workplaces, Through Worker-Centered Solutions

Lola Loustaunau, keynote speaker at CVTC's Safety Day 2025, in a black blazer and yellow top.

Presented By: Lola Loustaunau

Workplace health and safety are fundamental rights, yet Wisconsin workers face preventable risks daily. In this keynote, Dr. Lola Loustaunau presents groundbreaking findings from the Listening to Wisconsin’s Workers report, a statewide study exposing systemic failures in worker protections. Supported by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the report amplifies firsthand accounts from manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and other high-risk sectors, revealing alarming patterns of understaffing, inadequate training, missing safety equipment, and retaliation against those who speak up.

Dr. Loustaunau will dissect how these challenges intersect with race, immigration status, and economic precarity, leaving workers vulnerable to injury and exploitation. But this isn’t just a story of problems, it’s a call to action. Attendees will explore actionable solutions, from stronger enforcement of safety laws to innovative training models that empower workers as partners in prevention. The talk will challenge policymakers, employers, and advocates to rethink "business as usual" and center worker voices in designing workplaces where dignity and safety come first.
