Dual Credit High School Academy

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer incoming juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in construction the opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits successfully earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC degree programs and transfer to other opportunities.

Course Description

475-103 Construction Safety (2 Credits)
This is a course that starts 2 weeks before the fall semester program courses for Residential Construction.  This course is a prerequisite to all Residential Construction Courses and the student will need to pass the Construction Safety course to start the remaining first semester courses.  The major emphasis will be on machine, power, and hand tool safety.  Job site safety, ladders, scaffolding, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards will also be covered. This course also introduces the student to the basic methods of floor, wall, and basic roof framing. The students will build small storage sheds for the main lab projects. Students will also complete an OSHA 10-hour general construction training course. Certificate awarded on completion of training.  

475-112 Construction Basics and Print Reading (2 Credits)
This is a first semester course with an emphasis on residential construction.  During this course you will start with basic construction language, symbols, and print reading fundamentals.  Proper use of the architects scale and understanding the different scales and their uses will be taught.  Mathematics for the construction industry will be covered.  The main emphasis of this course will be to prepare the students to function at the job site when reading prints, completing layouts and math calculations needed to properly build a project.  This course needs to be taken while you are enrolled in Framing the Envelope.
