The Right Choice
CVTC has partnered with local school districts to offer high school students who are at least 16 years old the opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Students will explore principles of fire fighting alongside local firefighters, engage in hands on firefighting experiences and participate in a live burn. Students will connected with volunteer fire fighters and be able to apply as a volunteer fire fighter. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC FireMedic program. Students will take the Hazardous Materials Operations Responder, and Firefighter 1 Practical Skills Review courses. They will also sit for the State of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter 1 exam and earn credit toward the FireMedic Degree.

Academy Location: CVTC Fire Safety Center
The Principles of Firefighting course prepares students for all aspects of firefighting. This 3 credit course utilizes the NFPA 1001 curriculum for Firefighter I. The course will incorporate the use of protective gear, scene safety, ropes and knots, fire control, fire behavior, ladder usage, and water supply to provide the student with the basic knowledge to be a firefighter in Wisconsin.
503-105 Principles of Firefighting (3 Credits)This course introduces the student to the basic skills and techniques used in firefighting. Classroom instruction includes a variety of fire-related topics which are reinforced and enhanced through practical skills activities. The course content follows the requirements for NFPA 1001 Firefighter I. Upon completion, the student is eligible to take the Hazardous Materials Operations class. Upon successful completion of both courses, the student may test for state fire certification.
