Machine Tool

Dual Credit High School Academy

CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer students who are interested in pursuing a career in Machine Tool an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. This academy begins a student's preparation for employment in CNC programming, CNC machining, CNC operation, mold making, and quality control inspection.

This program is great for students who have good mechanical skills and enjoy building, working with their hands, or creating items.

Students will learn the following:

  • Operating industrial-sized manual machine tools – including engine lathes and grinding machines
  • Precision tolerances with machine tools
  • Chip removal processes and applied physics

When: September 3, 2019 – January 17, 2020

Location: Augusta High School

Credentials

  • 5 credits into CVTC Manufacturing programs, including credits towards their Welding and Machine Tooling Technics program
  • National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certification, an industry recognized certificate

Course Description

Manual Lathe Operations
This course is intended to develop the fundamental skill for a career in the machining trade. Fundamental processes include the following:   Manual Lathe operation, basic set-up, lay-out, measurement, turning processes, and tool geometry/sharpening. The format for this class is a self-paced lab with a minimum allowable standard established.  This course requires the purchase of tools and measuring equipment required for working in the Machine Tool lab.

Blueprint Reading
This course is designed with an emphasis on machine tooling technology related to multi-view computer-aided design (CAD-working drawings in 2D & 3D) and manufacturing prints, freehand sketches, and construction layout geometry. Visualization, line usage, working drawings, holes, sections, threads, angles and tapers, and machine details are interpreted from industry standards. Use of the Machinery's Handbook, ASME Y14.5 Dimensioning and Tolerancing documents are applied to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) with shop drawings/prints.
