Access Restored: Canvas (LMS)

Canvas service has been restored and is now available.

While there is no confirmed connection between the recent Instructure security incident and the system outage, we encourage everyone to stay cautious.

What you should do

  • Be careful with unexpected emails or messages about Canvas, grades, or account activity
  • Do not click links or open attachments from messages you were not expecting
  • When in doubt, go directly to Canvas instead of using links in emails

Aware and Monitor: Canvas (LMS) Outage

CVTC users are currently unable to access Canvas due to an unplanned outage affecting Instructure, the Canvas vendor.

  • The outage is occurring within Canvas systems
  • We are actively monitoring updates from Instructure
  • Check the status of Canva at https://status.instructure.com/

Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.

Update: Canvas (LMS) Security Incident

Instructure, the provider of Canvas, has shared a final update on the previously reported incident:

  • Canvas is fully operational and the incident is considered resolved
  • No ongoing unauthorized activity has been identified

As a precaution, continue using good security habits, like using multi-step login verification when available and keeping your accounts secure.

Canvas (LMS) Security Incident

Chippewa Valley Technical College has been notified of a nationwide data security incident involving Instructure, the provider of our Canvas learning management system (LMS).

  • Instructure has confirmed that an unauthorized third party accessed certain Canvas data. Instructure is providing updates via their status site.
  • The company reports the incident has been contained and is continuing its investigation.
  • CVTC systems and network have not been compromised.

What information may be impacted:

  • User details such as name and email address
  • Content within Canvas, such as messages or course interactions

At this time, there is no indication that passwords, financial information, or government identifiers were involved.

What you should do:

  • Be cautious of unexpected emails related to Canvas, grades, or account activity
  • Do not click links or download attachments from unfamiliar messages

CVTC is actively monitoring updates from Instructure and will share additional information as it becomes available.

Important Notice: BEC Closure at 4 p.m. on Friday 2/27

The Business Education Center will close early at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 27, due to water service in the building being shut off for planned construction activity. Please review the Early Closure procedure to make necessary arrangements.

CVTC Systems Restored – 10/21/25

All CVTC systems affected by the AWS outage have been restored at this time. Our team will continue to monitor.

CVTC System Outage – 10/20/25

CVTC is currently experiencing technology issues resulting from last night's AWS (Amazon Web Services) outage, including Canvas and Jira.

Our teams are monitoring AWS's recovery efforts and will share updates by email as soon as more information becomes available.

River Falls Campus Closure - 09/19/25

All CVTC River Falls classes and services will be virtual on Friday, Sept. 19. The River Falls campus buildings will be closed for the day. Students, monitor your CVTC email for further updates.

EEC Closure Update

The Energy Education Center will reopen for business on Friday, September 5. The HVAC incident has been evaluated and contained, and continual monitoring will occur to provide ongoing updates if the status should change.

Students should plan to attend classes at their normally scheduled locations on Friday, September 5. Check Canvas and CVTC email for additional messaging from instructors.

EEC Closure – 09/04/25

CVTC Energy Education Center will be closed on Thursday, September 4, due to an HVAC failure. Courses are being shifted to other CVTC buildings or to a virtual environment. Students should consult Canvas and look for communications from their instructors. 

In general, students should plan to attend classes as follows:

CVTC team members will be stationed outside of the Energy Education Center to help identify where students need to go for their classes. 

The Energy Education Center parking lots will remain open, and students can park there.
