Lab Assistant - CVTC River Falls Campus
The Lab Assistant program is a one - semester, three - credit program that introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures performed in a medical laboratory. In the Lab Assistant program, you will learn how to:
- Use basic laboratory equipment
- Follow infection control procedures
- Perform simple laboratory test
You will practice doing routine laboratory collection procedures, capillary puncture, and venipuncture (blood draws) in class with your classmates. The lab assistant classes ladder into CVTC’s Medical Laboratory Technician program.
Credentials Earned Upon Completion: Lab Assistant Technical Diploma
Requirements for the program:
- A grade of B - or higher is required in all courses
- You must be 17 years old to take the phlebotomy class, but a signed consent form from a guardian to participate in lab activities is required if under 18
- Ability and willingness to have blood draws performed on yourself in class
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Criminal background check
- Be at least 18 years old
- Some employers may require health physicals and/or immunizations
Course Descriptions
BASIC LAB SKILLS
513 - 110 | 1 Credit
This course explores health career options and the principles and procedures of basic tests performed in the clinical laboratory. You will utilize medical terminology and general laboratory equipment. You will follow required safety and infection control procedures and perform simple laboratory tests.
PHLEBOTOMY
513 - 111 | 2 Credits
This course provides opportunities for leaners to perform routine venipuncture, routine capillary puncture, and special collection procedures. The student must be 18 years old to register for this course.
