IT - Software Development Specialist

CVTC is offering high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in the IT field an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC's technical degree programs. Students enrolled in this academy will focus on the exploration of resolving software - based computer problems in today's digital office environments.

Credentials Earned: Upon successful completion of this academy, students may earn their IT - Software Development Specialist Technical Diploma. 


Requirements

  • Grade Requirement: To be considered as completing the academy successfully, students must earn a grade of C - or higher in all courses. 

  • Technology Requirements: Students will be required to have access to a computer to complete their online course hours and homework.  The computer must meet the minimum requirements or better to be used for the duration of the program.  If a student does not have a computer, CVTC may have a device that the student can check out.

Course Descriptions

152 - 101 Programming Fundamentals | 3 credits

This course is designed to be a student's second programming course. It provides an in - depth look into fundamental computer programming concepts including: variables, input - processing - output, if - then - else logic, for loops, while loops, array processing, and functions. With an emphasis on hands - on activities, students use pseudocode and flowcharting tools to build problem - solving skills. Programming concepts and problem - solving skills are synergized and applied through the completion of a variety of programming exercises using the JavaScript programming language. The course will culminate with a Final Project lab.

Prerequisite: 152 - 118 Introduction to Computers & Programming

152 - 107 Web 1 - HTML & CSS | 3 credits
This course is designed to be a "first course" in web site development. Students work with a text editor and a browser to develop web pages from scratch using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control color, layout, text, and images. Responsive design principles and accessibility standards are incorporated to ensure web sites are usable and professional - looking. Tables, forms, audio, and video components are included to add variety and pizzazz.

152 - 118 Introduction to Computers Programming | 3 credits
Empower your future with computing! Explore the fundamental knowledge and skills you'll need for success in Information Technology. Learn to navigate operating systems like an ace, solve problems like a pro, and stay secure like a whiz. Plus, get a head start with programming concepts and JavaScript. Go ahead and open the door to exciting career opportunities.

152 - 132 Database 1 | 3 credits
This course is designed as a first database course, this course introduces students to the concepts of relational database management and beginning SQL. Students explore the history and evolution of databases and investigate current database usage in industry. This relational model is examined and utilized as students' practice creating, populating, manipulating, and querying multi - table relational databases using the SQLite database.

801 - 196 Oral/Interpersonal Communication | 3 credits
Focuses on developing effective listening techniques and verbal and nonverbal communication skills through oral presentation, group activity, and other projects. The study of self, conflict, and cultural contexts will be explored, as well as their impact on communication.
