Welding - Lippert

CVTC and Lippert have partnered to offer incoming high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in Welding and have been selected by Lippert an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. If selected by Lippert to participate in the Academy, Lippert will pay for you to complete the Lippert Welding Academy and the Summer 2026 classes.

This academy is designed to provide basic skill levels for entry - level employment in production welding. Students will learn welding safety, basic welding math, welding print reading, and wire feed processes.

Post - Academy: Students will need to complete the 6 credit, 2 class Summer 2028 commitment after high school graduation to earn the one - year Welding Technical Diploma.

Credentials Earned: Upon successful completion of this academy, students may earn their Intro to Gas Metal Arc Welding Pathway Certificate.
Students may continue on to earn their 1 - Year Technical Diploma after completing the 2 remaining courses, worth 6 credits, in Summer 2028.

Course Descriptions

442 - 300 Advanced Sheild Metal Arc Welding | 3 credits

Students will learn equipment setup and safe practices, as well as perform SMAW welds in all positions while following WPS's in a lab setting.

442 - 303 Metals Technology | 1 credit
Introduces the student to a variety of technical topics related to the Welding program. Topics will include: machine settings, wire and electrode designations, drilling operations, data sheet interpretation, structural steel methods, maintenance of welding equipment, etc. Discussion will also take place on issues such as work ethics and job/work attitudes.

442 - 307 Welding Print Reading | 2 credits
Drawing fundamentals related to 2 and 3 view drawings; visual projection methods; freehand sketching; weld symbols and how to apply them. Interpret weld blueprints according to industry standards.

442 - 310 Welding Safety & Orientation | 1 credit
Introduces welding safety and standard operating procedures on equipment commonly used in welding labs/shops   and on tools received in student's toolbox. Students will be able to receive an OSHA 10 safety certificate.

442 - 325 Shielded Metal Arc Welding | 3 credits
Students will learn equipment set up, safe practices, and electrode identification as well as perform SMAW welds in flat and horizontal positions in a lab setting.

442 - 327 Welding Theory | 2 credits
Continuation of Metals Technology 1, 442 - 303, expanding on and covering a variety of technical topics related to the Welding program. Topics will include: material handling, introduction to Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) and certifications. Discussion will also GTAW process, electrode and filler metal.

442 - 360 Robotic Welding | 4 credits
Safety; setup; programming; and operation of a welding robot. Variables and problems will be studied and solutions applied to provide a practical, efficient application of the GMAW (gas metal arc welding) process to an automated system.

442 - 362 Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) | 4 credits
Introduction to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW, wire feed welding, MIG). Develop skills with solid wire GMAW short - circuit transfer in various positions and joint designs.

442 - 363 Advanced Gas Metal Arc Welding | 4 credits
Continuation of Basic Wire - Feed Welding. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW, wire - feed welding, MIG) using spray transfer, pulse GMAW, flux - cored wire, aluminum, and stainless steel wire on various metals and joint designs. Destructive and nondestructive testing methods; welding codes and certification.

442 - 380 Industrial Skills for Welders | 2 credits

In this course, the student will develop math skills and job - seeking skills for the welding career to meet the demands of today's industry. Application - based math topics will address fractions, decimals, fraction conversion to decimals and metric equivalents, geometry and trig formulas, and algebraic problem - solving. The student will use blueprints for layout calculations and techniques. The student will also develop job - seeking skills such as employment search, resumes, application forms, and employer interviews.

457 - 300 Fabrication | 3 credits
