Truck Driving - Day Program
CVTC and local high schools have partnered to offer incoming seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in Truck Driving an opportunity to earn high school and college credit. Dual credit academies give high school students a chance to navigate their interests and career options to develop the most successful individualized career path. Credits earned through this academy may be applied to CVTC programs.
Truck drivers are professional drivers who deliver goods between locations. Local truck drivers move goods from terminals and warehouses to factories, stores, and homes in the area. Skilled drivers maneuver trucks into tight parking spaces, through narrow alleys and up to loading platforms. This program offers training in local truck driving. Students experience classroom lessons and exercises with the semi - tractor/trailer.
The program has three start dates during the year: August, January, and June.

Requirements:
- Students must be 18 years or older to participate in the program.
- Students must have their CDL Learners Permit at the start of the class.
- All new Truck Driving applicants will be required to submit a copy of a current FedMed card, which will be obtained at your DOT Physical. Must be completed and sent to CVTC prior to the academy class starting.
- Additional items at students expense: CDL Permit - Cost due at the time the permit is issued, DOT Physical - $90 - 150 depending on provider. (Financial Assistance may be available through United Way funding, for more information contact Student Central at (715) 833 - 6200.)
Credentials Earned
- Truck Driving (30 - 458 - 1), Technical Diploma
- Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes
- Doubles/triples, and tanker endorsements if written tests are passed at DMV

Through hands - on and online instructional experiences, you'll receive training patterned after the day - to - day demands of this career, including shifting, 10 - speed, and automatic transmissions, conducting the pre - trip inspection, and backing maneuvers.
Course Descriptions
Overview of vehicle control systems, with a demonstration of the air brake system and how it operates. A pre, en - route, and post - trip inspection will be given. Course will also cover Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
458 - 351 Basic Ops/Comm Motor Vehicle
Course covers basic operation of a combination commercial motor vehicle, as well as an introduction to vehicle automated transmissions using tractor trailers on range/rodeo area. Introduce backing exercises to include straight line and offset. Proper techniques for coupling/uncoupling of a Class A commercial combination vehicle.
458 - 352 Range Maneuvers/Comm Motor Veh
Continue backing skills to include 90 and 45 degree backing and parallel backing maneuvers, as well as other slow maneuver operating practices.
458 - 353 Save Comm Motor Vehicle Ops
Student will begin behind the wheel activities on the public roadway in the Class A commercial vehicle. Course covers behind the wheel safe commercial vehicle operations, including driver behavior, communication with other vehicles, and speed/space management.
458 - 354 Road Maneuvers/Comm Motor Veh
Students will continue behind the wheel activities on the public roadway in a variety of situations, including roundabouts, turns, lane changes, on/off ramps, interstate driving, and railroad crossings. Student will be introduced to CDL test items.
458 - 355 Advanced Operating Procedures
Students will further their knowledge of operating procedures with behind the wheel activities and online learning to understand and prepare for: night operations, extreme driving conditions, skid control/recovery, emergency maneuvers, and wilder turns requiring use of other lanes of traffic. How to avoid distracted driving and hazards will also be covered. Hours of service will also be covered.
458 - 356 Veh Sys & Report Malfunctions
Course covers identification/diagnostics of malfunctions on a Class A commercial combination vehicle, how to handle roadside inspections and sliding tandems and 5th wheels, as well as a variety of vehicle technologies. Compliance and safety will be covered, along with how to handle cargo.
458 - 357 Non - Driving Activities
Students will learn a variety of non - driving techniques/procedures important to day - to - day operations of a Class A commercial combination vehicle. These include but are not limited to; trip planning, business practices, wellness/fatigue prevention, post - crash procedures, and external communication. Special situations and circumstances, along with medical requirements for commercial licensing will be covered.
458 - 358 Basic Ops of a Manual Trans I
Course covers basic operation of a manual transmissions using tractor trailer. Students will continue to build on backing skills, to include 90 and 45 degree backing and parallel backing maneuvers.
458 - 359 Basic Ops of a Manual Trans II
Students will continue behind - the - wheel activities on the public roadways in the variety of situations while using a Manual Transmission.
