What is TRIO/Student Support Services?

TRIO Student Support Services

The Student Support Services program is part of the TRIO family of programs and helps low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities achieve their dreams of higher education. TRIO/Student Support Services is federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Goals of TRIO/SSS

  • Increase retention and graduation rates of participants and support students with the process of transferring to a 4-year college.
  • Provide support for participants who are actively using TRIO/Student Support Services resources to facilitate their personal and academic success.
  • Improve student graduation by providing financial assistance for those that meet income guidelines and have unmet financial aid needs.

Who is eligible to participate in CVTC's TRIO/SSS Program?

  • First-generation college students (which means that neither parent has completed a bachelor’s degree)
  • Lower income students (as determined by federal guidelines)
  • Students with a documented disability

CVTC TRIO/Student Support Services is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant and serves 140 students annually. TRIO/SSS serves all program participants regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national or ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, or age.

Frequently Asked Questions

​What do I have to do?

Once you are accepted into our program, you will be required to do the following:

  • Meet with Project Director or Project Coach various times throughout the semester.
  • Work with Project Director or Project Coach at start of program to develop individual success plans.
  • Meet with Academic Advisor throughout each term to develop your education plan.
  • Meet with Career Services team as you get closer to graduation and begin your career planning.
  • As a new participant, take part in New Student Orientation as well as SSS onboarding.
  • Attend various cultural and social events put on by TRIO or campus partners

How long will I be in the program?

Participants are able to remain in the program until they graduate and/or transfer to another college. Typically, participants connect with TRIO during their first year at CVTC. Continuing students at CVTC are also eligible and encouraged to apply.

How much time will the program take every semester?

This is up to you! It could be as little as a few hours per week. However, we hope that through our programming and meetings, you will want to be as involved as possible. TRIO meetings, workshops, discussions, and tutoring are offered to help ensure your success at CVTC and beyond.

​How much does it cost to participate in TRIO/SSS?

This is the best part, all TRIO grant related activities are FREE! Whether we are doing an event here on campus or we take a trip into the community, you will never have to spend a dime for TRIO activities. All we ask is that you take full advantage of the resources that we make available to you.
