Is CVTC’s Architectural Structural Design program right for you? Let’s take a look at what you can expect and the opportunities available to you.

You Can Succeed

If you like to see how things are built and would enjoy being part of a design team, working for months on a project that culminates in seeing a structure built, CVTC’s Architectural Structural Design program could be the right choice for you.

Students who succeed in the program and in the profession like both working extensively with computer software and interacting with team members in collaborative efforts. They have good problem-solving, math, and other technical skills, but also good communication skills. Architectural Structural Design graduates work with a wide variety of professionals, including contractors, owners, architects and engineers. They all work together for a common purpose and at the end of the process can see the results of their work in completed structures.

Opportunities abound

CVTC Architectural Structural Design graduates find immediate employment, mostly in one of two areas. Many work in a structural engineering office on the design of a building from the foundation to the basic structure around which an architect will work on the overall design.

Other CVTC graduates work in steel detailing. Every piece of steel in a structure has to be drawn in detail down to 1/16th of an inch tolerance as a guide to fabricators and contractors.

Some graduates to on to work for architectural firms as well.

No matter which path individual graduates take, they will find their services highly sought-after. Companies actively recruit at CVTC. Companies have established satellite offices in the Chippewa Valley to help them recruit the graduates.

Once employed in the field, graduates have future opportunities to advance into project lead or project management positions.

You’ll be in Demand

“I went through the program myself, and I know what they are being taught,” said Don Loew of DRL Drafting and Design in Chippewa Falls about why he likes to hire CVTC graduates. “Overall, it’s because of the consistency of the kind of people the program produces.”

Loew added that five of seven drafters in their office graduated from CVTC’s program.

“They start out as CAD techs and they can move up to project managers,” Lowe said. “While recent graduates are hired as drafters, we also hire highly experienced people who graduated from CVTC’s program years ago. It’s not just entry-level graduates that we like.”
