Do you like to understand how things work? Do you enjoy taking things apart and figuring out what makes them tick? If so, CTC’s Automation Engineering Technology program could be the right choice for you.
Students who succeed in the Automation Engineering Technology program like to work with both their minds and their hands. They like to figure out how machines can be designed and programmed to perform specific tasks. In the program, they work on projects directly related to equipment used in modern manufacturing, and also learn principles of automation by working on fun projects involving robotic equipment. Along the way, they learn to troubleshoot and solve problems using critical thinking skills.
Opportunities abound
CVTC Automation Engineering Technology graduates are heavily recruited by local manufacturers who need their expertise to keep their plants running efficiently. Students are often hired before they graduate and can make a difference in the companies right away. Graduates are often hired by companies that pair them with a mentor who will help them grow and develop and understand that plant’s needs.
Many graduates go on to become maintenance managers, or other higher positions in the company. CVTC Automation Engineering Technology graduates have been put in charge of multi-million dollar equipment or process improvements and purchases. Some positions in the field take automation professionals around the country or world.
Many companies come back to hire more CVTC graduates once they have hired their first.

Area employers are eager to hire CVTC Automation Engineering Technology graduates, or to send their existing employees to the program for training.
“I send employees to the automation engineering program at CVTC because it gives them a good base of knowledge to function as a more efficient member of our maintenance crew,” said Adam Falteisek, maintenance supervisor for Andersen Window in Menomonie. “The days of only needing a toolbox to keep a plant up and running are long gone. When you look at equipment that is being used in most industries a large majority have one thing in common, they are controlled by some type of PLC or logic device. A computer has gotten to be one of the most powerful tools that my mechanics have in their arsenal and the Automation Engineering program gives them the knowledge to use that tool effectively and efficiently.”
We hire CVTC Automation Engineering graduates for our Process Maintenance positions,” said Brad Moran, maintenance/facility manager at TTM Technologies in Chippewa Falls. “Here at TTM we expect the individual to have the expertise and abilities to perform all aspects of the electromechanical maintenance field, ranging from electrical, plumbing, welding, electronics, mechanical, pneumatics, and hydraulics.”
Moran added that there are opportunities to move up at TTM. “Advancement in our maintenance department is mainly on the shoulders of the individual. I myself started as a Tech I back 1988 and now run the department as a manager, so advancement is there, you just need the drive.”
