Voices of the Valley: Meet Marcelle
From Ivory Coast
Since my childhood I have always been afraid of heights. I told myself the day I take the plane I'm going to take sleeping pills to avoid the fear of flying. Coming to the USA was my first flight by plane.
My daughter was sometimes on my knees because I had to breastfeed her, so it was impossible to take sleeping pills and sleep.
The take-off of the plane already gave me a taste of the fear I was going to feel. We traveled during winter and the flight was very difficult with rough turbulence. It was terrifying, I was really scared. When the flight was quiet, some were sleeping, others were watching movies, but I had to stay focused on the flight. My only wish was that we land as soon as possible.
We landed in the USA after 15 hours of flight. I looked good when I was boarding the plane but on landing I had a blanched face and my clothing floated because the stress of flying made me lose some pounds during the flight. It was the biggest fear of my life. I could never forget.
