Legal Studies/Paralegal Overview

Are you interested in the legal system and the law? Do you enjoy getting to the bottom of things doing careful research? If so, then pursuing a paralegal degree is the right choice! A paralegal is a trained professional who can step into a legal system and assist lawyers in all aspects of practicing law by attending client meetings, investigating client cases, drafting court documents, and researching legal matters.

Paralegals are not attorneys and are not authorized to practice law but they play a crucial role in providing legal services to the public.

In CVTC’s Legal Studies/Paralegal program, you will learn how to:

  • Investigate facts of a legal case
  • Summarize client interviews and testimony
  • Research legal issues
  • Perform case management tasks
  • Prepare legal documents
  • Assist attorneys in the courtroom at trials and hearings

You will gain the following skills:

  • Legal writing
  • Law – family, criminal, contract, immigration, employment, elder, real estate, administrative
  • Administration of estates
  • Legal research

Students will complete an internship to gain practical experience working in a legal environment under the supervision of an attorney or other qualified professional for a minimum of 144 hours. They will also meet one hour per week to discuss legal office experiences and ethical considerations, learn effective job search techniques, and develop professional image.
