Accounting Program Details

If you enjoy working with numbers, have strong math skills, and have an interest in a business career, pursuing an accounting degree is the right choice. CVTC offers a two-year Accounting associate degree. The accounting classes will teach you how to:

  • Set up and maintain accounting records and systems
  • Analyze financial records
  • Prepare individual and small business tax returns
  • Prepare monthly and year-end financial reports
  • Calculate, record, and make required payroll deposits and filings

CVTC’s faculty works with industry professionals to determine the skills they are looking for in accountants. Most companies and businesses want accountants to have excellent problem solving and communication skills. CVTC’s Accounting program helps develop these skills.

Technical Diplomas within this Program

Earn a technical diploma in Accounting Assistant or Bookkeeper. If you decide to pursue the Accounting associate degree, your diploma will apply towards that degree.

Do you enjoy working with numbers and supporting a team? As an accounting assistant, you will maintain timely and accurate records of daily business transactions. Examples include: accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, inventory management, and other business records. Learn to assist an accountant in preparing important financial statements. You will learn how to compile and report financial data. Students will gain experience with QuickBooks and spreadsheet applications related to business. You’ll also learn and practice written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to apply their credits to the Accounting Associate Degree program.

  • Accounting Spreadsheets
    Students will utilize a variety of financial analysis, and database functions, as they create, format, and modify worksheets using Microsoft Office.
  • Accounting Software Applications
    Students will use PeachTree Complete Accounting software and QuickBooks Pro software to create and maintain accounting records and to edit and design reports and financial statements.
  • Cost Accounting
    Topics include budgeting, standard cost variances, direct costing, and break-even analysis.

Career Outlook

According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and Bureau of Workforce Information, a 5% growth is projected in accounting positions in CVTC’s 11-county area by 2016.

Accounting graduates are eligible to take the Accreditation in Accountancy (ABA) and/or an Enrolled Agent (EA) exam to further support their educational background.
