Our communities and schools need caring individuals who have the training and tools to assist students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Designed for working paraprofessionals, those looking to get into a career in education, or parents or care providers wanting to better understand ASD, this program will teach you the essential skills to understand an ASD diagnosis. Then build on those skills to utilize the recommended interventions, strategies, and approaches to celebrate the ideas and interests of these special individuals.

The Autism Technician technical diploma includes hours in a practicum placement directly working with people with autism.

The Autism Technician program will teach you how to:

  • Learn methods to better support and work with students with disabilities in K-12 school settings
  • Provide meaningful, student-centered accommodations for individuals diagnosed with ASD
  • Work as an instructional assistant, supporting children with diverse educational needs
  • Interact and communicate effectively with children with special needs
  • Provide behavior management and crisis intervention
  • Work as a team member providing services to children with special needs
  • Use sound judgment and knowledge of student behaviors and district policies to make decisions

Behavior Management
Students evaluate models of behavior management, analyze social emotional learning, and explain the importance of proactive management techniques. In addition, students evaluate models of behavior management, analyze behavior and analyze the influence of Adverse Childhood Experiences on behavior in order to focus on developing skills to assist in empowering children to take an active role in self-control and classroom management.

Overview of Autism
Understanding the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is critical for those interacting with children/youth on the spectrum. Develop a fundamental understanding of what ASD is, how it is diagnosed and the primary areas of impairment.

Autism in the Classroom
Explore the effects of a positive learning environment, specialized instructional methods and relevant services to support children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in classroom settings.
