Pharmacy Technician Overview

You will learn how to:

  • Process prescription orders in both retail and hospital settings
  • Comprehend and use medical and drug terminology common to pharmaceutical environments
  • Understand professional, ethical and legal implications of your actions as it relates to yourself, the pharmacists, customers, and the pharmacy
  • Calculate drug dosages, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, and dose conversions

Bloodborne Pathogens

Students entering health programs at CVTC should understand the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDs, through saliva and blood with direct patient care as part of their education.

This exposure can be minimized or eliminated using a combination of engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, training, medical surveillance, Hepatitis B vaccination, signs and labels, and other provisions.

All programs at CVTC comply with local, state, and federal infection control policies, including the use of standard precautions as stipulated by current CDC guidelines. Written policies and instructions on infection control protocol to minimize the risk of disease transmission is provided throughout the courses in the curriculum. Compliance of safety practices is evaluated throughout the students' clinical experiences to ensure a safe educational environment.

Pharmaceutical Calculations
Prepares the learner to convert weights and volumes between the avoirdupois, the apothecary, and the metric systems of measurement.

Pharmacology for Pharmacy Technician
Prepares the learner to summarize treatments for diseases of the Musculoskeletal, Dermatologic, Endocrine, Reproductive, Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Hematologic, Immune, Nervous, Gastrointestinal, and Renal systems, plus the eyes, ears, nose, and throat, and to use antineoplastic and geriatric drugs.

Hospital Pharmacy Lab
Students learn about unit-dose packaging, filling of unit dose charts, IV compounding, interpreting physician orders, and utilization of aseptic technique in laminar flow hood settings.
